As an American, I agree that Americans are a paranoid people. However, I don't think this show is just sensationalist garbage. This is one episode of a special series about people who were kidnapped abroad. Most of the people on this show weren't kidnapped, they went to prison for crimes that they admit to being guilty of (usually smuggling). The main message isn't that foreign countries are scary, it's more like "don't be stupid, don't be greedy, don't to stuff you know is illegal!"

The reality of the matter is the US is probably more dangerous than most developed countries. As informative and interesting as these type of shows are, they sensationalize danger and crimes abroad as though these countries are death traps.

@boston312 The US may have more violence than most developed nations but it nowhere near as bad as the violence in developing countries. The paranoia among American travelers in poorer countries isn't without merit. It's better to go somewhere knowing the potential dangers instead of just being naive.

Americans are paranoid people to began with. These shows deter international travel for Americans and reconfirms their negative stereotypes about other countries. Truth is America has more violence than the majority of the worlds other countries including developing countries
