Iry LeJeune Evangeline Special.
Born at Pointe Noire in '28 and killed at the side of the road after his fellow musician's car got a puncture. He'd been playing a 'gig' in Eunice and was run down by a maniac driver. That was in '55. Iry was just 26.

Hé-y-yaille, Lui l'à venu, m'voulu cher
pour m'demander d'me dire pardons, il connais il avait mal

Hey 'tite fille, rappelle toi moi j'connais
Moi j'après te dire asteure, la parole j'voulais pas t'dire
Hé-y-yaille, si tu m'aime mais blâme moi pas
Si les autres t'après donner, les conseils écoute les pas!

  • I think I'm wrong when I recalled that the account of the details of the accident were obtained from an interview with J.B.Fuselier. I think the first true account came from a journalist's account in the 1970's. I don't have the book anymore so I may have recalled incorrectly.

  • @spazhat Perhaps someone can help. I have seen a press cutting from the time somewhere, it was in a US National paper, perhaps the more local newspaper of the time has more information. Worth researching, as would the incident involving Cleoma Falcon who had a similar accident, I will when I get time, just very busy lately, only get time to quickly look in.

  • Ron Yule's book, "Iry Lejuene: Wailin" The Blues Cajun Style" describes the accident scene in detail, in an interview with J. B. Fuselier, who was the driver of the car that Iry was riding in. He states a previously unpublished vital detail that accounted for the collision and also fills out the scene with other little- known details. (I have read many accounts!) This book reveals Iry's personality. Great pictures too. I don't have a connection with Mr. Yule. I'm just a big fan of his book.

  • @spazhat Yes, thanks for the comment, Iry also had poor sight which may have not helped Iry, though it is known the driver of the car that hit him was to blame. I had read that he'd been killed while they were fixing the flat, but maybe you'd be kind enough can tell more.

  • What fascinates me about this, is how real it sounds. I like Sonnier's version well enough, but feels much more special.

  • Iry lejuene is my 4th cousin. My grandmothers second. It's cool that I am related to him. I live in Basile.

  • Les roulesz bon temps. (right? I don't speak accadian french, or write french.)

  • The book has been available for several years. I would love to get full-sized copies of the photos of Iry with Nathan Abshire, and Iry with Doug Kershaw. They were taken in one of those little photo booths. If anybody knows how to obtain sharp copies, let me know.

  • Spazhat.. Thanks for the response. I take it, the books not out yet. I'd really like ro read it.

  • It's not a secret. In fact, it has been known since the 1970's. I never heard about it though. (J.B.Fuselier knew about it immediately, of course, but he never told it.) Nobody has taken the time to write a book about Iry Lejeune except Ron Yule so his efforts should be rewarded.

  • @spazhat Why should'nt the whole world know. What's so secret about it?
