When selecting a piece of material to convert into a movie I looked for something that had a lot of layers to read into and the graphic novel of Watchmen served as just that. What really intrigued me about the story is the comic, The Black Freighter, within it. Oddly enough I often skipped over the parts where this comic was presented for a quick and flawless read, knowing that the style of writing was different and was hard to get adjusted to for such a brief time. I know that I was not the only one plagued with this poor habit in reading and so I decided that piecing together The Black Freighter would be perfect.
Upon doing this I realized that The Black Freighter is a really amazing story on its own and that in the Watchmen it can only stand in the shadows. By taking it out, the story could be appreciated on its own. Supplementally, it supports the Watchmen story by offering an intense and consistent artery of foreshadowing which becomes evident as the story is told unhindered.
