Ascend-Original (Beloved by Toni Morrison)

I wrote this song in response to Toni Morrison's novel Beloved. Part of the school series I'm uploading. I wrote this in senior year of high school.
It is written in the perspective of three different characters, with each character having one verse and chorus.


I escaped from slavery and I'm not going back. You cant take them. They're the best part of me. No way they're gonna go through what Ive been through. Whatever it takes Ill keep them.

Someone told me we ascend into love. I hope its true. Then maybe someday my girl will learn to forgive. I know the things I did may seem out of place, but I know I would do them again.

I'm in dark place. No, here the sun don't shine. That face is mine. A hot thing. 1, 2, _, 4. I'm the missing 3. Can you help me get to the river?

Someone told me we ascend into love. I know its true cause I'm standing on this bridge in the bright sunshine. On my neck there is the sign of her love, and I know I must be where she is.

My red, red heart is not what it used to be. Its now a tin box with lid rusted shut. She came to me with chamomile legs and I knew things would never be the same.

Someone told me we ascend into love. I hope its true, but right now I am falling for you. When this sadness dissipates you will find we will all be ascending into love.

absolutely beautiful! i love your voice and the lyrics. I read this book in class and definitely fell in love with it. i love how you took actual descriptions from the book for your lyrics.
