(Shots Fired At Viewing For Teen Homicide Victim)
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Witnesses describe a frightening and chaotic scene in Oakland late Thursday when gunshots rang out during a viewing at a funeral home for a teenage homicide victim.
Police said the shooting at the Colonial Chapel Funeral Home on High Street appeared to be the latest volley in an escalating war between Latin street gangs.
Oakland police are working to keep a lid on the simmering pot of a gang war in the city's Fruitvale District. Following this brazen shooting late Thursday, it's clear that officers have their hands full.
At about 4 p.m. after a car began to circle the area the Colonial Chapel, gunfire erupted during the viewing of the body of 15-year-old Eric Monrroy.
Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said it appeared some people attending Monrroy's viewing went outside and started shooting at the circling car.
It was a real scary moment, said nearby business owner Jasmaine Briant. And it's really sad, because they were trying to have their funeral and they couldn't even have their funeral because of this. And it's sad that our community has to go through this each and every day.
Two witnesses who spoke to KTVU didn't want to be identified.
I heard between 6 and 8 shots, and then everybody started running, said one witness. They were running back in the chapel.
It was very frightening, said another witness. The police had been parked on the corner all day. It was like they were expecting trouble.
Police say they were expecting trouble, because Monrroy was shot and killed in a gang-related incident.
Monrroy was shot at about 12:08 a.m. on Sept. 2 in the 2500 block of Foothill Boulevard and later died at a local hospital, police said.
You know over the last few weeks, there has been a war going on, said Oakland Police Lt. Donna Hoppenhauer. It's a little heated up right now. There have been retaliations back and forth. And it's possible that this is part of that.
Police said Monrroy's death is part of this gang war. On the morning Monrroy died, the two men who shot him walked up to him opened fire without saying a word.
After Thursday's shooting, police detained numerous young people for questioning.
Officers recovered a gun and arrested one 17-year old suspected gang member who they believe was responsible for shooting at a passing truck.
No one was hurt in the shooting outside the funeral home.
We know a lot of the people involved. We try to keep in contact with them, said Lt. Hoppenhauer. We arrested seven or eight Nortenos last week that we believe were involved in gang activity, and possibly involved in this retaliation back and forth. And we're just trying to keep the peace out here and stop people's children from dying.
KTVU spoke with one admitted gang member Thursday who said that he doesn't want to be violent, but that it's hard to not want revenge when one of your friends is killed.
