Beitou has two kinds of hot springs – the white hot springs and the rarer green springs. During the Japanese Occupation of Taiwan , Japanese businessman Hirata Gengo opened the first hot springs baths in Beitou , called the Ten-gou-an , ushering the area into the era of commercial hot springs. In the years that followed, spas popped up one after another – like mushrooms following a rain , as the Chinese say – in the valley where the natural hot springs are found.
