This segment explores a wonderful little-known service which enables goldenagers to live more comfortably and safely while remaining in their own homes. Known as The Senior Companion Program, it is available nationwide, with different sponsors in different cities. Primary funding, however, is provided by the Federal government, and recipients do not pay to receive the service regardless of their economic status.
Meet four delightful San Bernardino, CA senior companionsguests Jessie Munoz, Judy Mlsna, Juanita Kelly, and Ron Haliburtonwho share the joy and fulfillment they receive from serving others. Also interviewed is the San Bernardino, CA program manager, the amazing Betty Deal.
What do companions do? They keep clients company—often while a spouse is away from homeprepare meals, drive them to appointments, play cards, visit or share memories.
Companions must be at least 60 years old and must qualify as low-income. After receiving pre-service training they are paid a modest non-reportable hourly stipend. For more information, a nationwide toll-free number and website are posted for viewers. For more information visit www.seniorcorps.gov.
