In December 2008, Oxford and Cambridge University raced on seperate days, members of their own squads in the Trial Eights on the River Thames in London.

For the first time this season, this practice Boat Race offers for each university, a select sixteen oarsmen and two coxes the chance to demonstrate their abilities on the famous 4 ¼ mile course from Putney to Mortlake, in conditions that could mirror those on Race Day.

The Trial Eights race also affords the coaches the chance to see how their squads are progressing in an authentic Boat Race situation and will help decide who will make up the Blue Boat next spring.
