COCHLEAR IMPLANTS

The Cochlear Implant Center at Schneider Children's opened in 2000 and comprises a multidisciplinary staff of specialists from both the Audiology Institute and the Department of Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose and Throat) including an otolarygologist (pediatric ENT specialist), audiologist, nurse, music and art therapists, a social worker, psychiatrist, communications technician and a speech and language therapist. Key personnel underwent advanced training at leading centers abroad obtaining special skills in cochlear implantation including objective acoustic emission and aural rehabilitation. The majority of children treated at Schneider Children's has developed speech and language and has been absorbed in the regular or integrated educational framework. The Center treats about 7,000 patients a year -- children and adults -- for various hearing impairments.

Cochlear Implants (CI) represent a revolution in the rehabilitation of hearing disorders. This new technology is implanted into the inner ear and transfers acoustic information into electrical impulses which are then sent to the acoustic nerve. The cochlear implant therefore, is a substitute for missing or damaged-sensation hair cells in the inner ear. Post operatively, the device must be adjusted in order to reach optimal hearing. The operation takes approximately 3-4 hours.

Prior to acceptance for CI surgery, the child is evaluated by a team of doctors including audiologists and a speech therapist. Hearing capability is assessed by behavioral audiometry, objective tests, acoustic nerve function, and inner ear function.

Children are covered in full by HMOs for the procedure. Adults may obtain coverage if they fall within the criteria established by the Ministry of Health.
