  • All historians would acknowledge that the Southern fleet inflicted far more damage than it received, which would ordinarily imply that they had gained a tactical victory. Compared to other Civil War battles, the loss of men and ships for the Union Navy would be considered a clear defeat. On the other hand, the blockade was not seriously threatened, so the entire battle can be regarded as an assault that ultimately failed.

    Thanks for watching!

  • .

The commander of the Virginia should have ignored the Monitor and attacked the blockading ships.

The was nothing the Monitor could do if Buchanan concentrated on that alone.

  • @mikeoforlando Agreed but the Virginia couldn't steer as well as the monitor and during the battle the Minnisota was parked right behind the monitor and the monitor kept moving so that the Virginia couldn't shoot one at the Minnisota! But the Virginia did try to hit the Blockade.

  • @boiledliddo I just finished reading a book about it and it said when I rammed the cumberland it lost the ram and got stuck but worked free. If it didn't make it free it would have sank with the cumberland.

  • A very well made summary of such a historic naval battle. Thanks for posting.

  • Anyway, most modern day historians consider the duel to be a draw. :)

  • @PanzerAce

Based on what I've read on several websites, the Virginia did manage to ram the Monitor but it couldn't punch a hole on the union ship because it had lost the cast iron "Prow" of it's ram. The iron prow of the Virginia was lost after ramming the Cumberland on the previous day.

  • Yeah. Apparently, during the battle the Monitor did cause small hull breaches, they just didn't think to aim below Virginia's water line

  • read a book about it, it was anything but superior. The Monitor would've dominated it had they used full powder charges in the guns

  • from what i can tell. the virgina was supirior. personally, i would have rammed the moniter.
