  • i have 1.7mb and there is 4 people in my house. so how much do we need to properly serve us all. and what is the recommended speed for online gaming and hd video streaming like net flix?????

  • I'm really not able to answer this question for, and would recommend you contact someone at Roku.

  • I'm not sure, to be honest with you. If I had to guess, I would say 1.5 mbps. It's AT&T's dsl service.

  • Hey, i am getting 2 roku boxes on thursday... what is your internet speed? cuz i am a little worried about the video quality... do you have fast internet? i have 15mps... - thanks

  • I have AT&T DSL coming into my home, which is plugged into an Apple Airport Extreme wireless router. The Aiport is 802.11b & g enabled and says it supports a maximum of 54MBS within a range of 50 feet and 11MPS at 150 feet. My Roku box is within that 50 foot range, but I have no real way of measuring what speed it's connecting at. I almost always get maximum quality when watching the Roku player. The only time it chokes up and my quality goes down is if I'm also downloading a lot to my laptop.

  • Thanks, this answered most of my questions. does it support dual hookup? HDMI to TV for video and optical cable to stereo (for surround home theater)?? can we view Youtube over this?

  • It has multiple outs, yes. I have HDMI going to my receiver (which also processes the audio). I also have component out going to my projector.

At the moment, YouTube video cannot be viewed with the Roku player.

  • @okcreative Why don't you just run a connection test online, and make sure everything you use with your internet is turned off except the window of the test on your browser. This way you get the highest speed your able to get. I did it the other day, and it says I get 6.5 mbps out of 7, which is what Qwest offers around here.

  • @ilovemaryam08 All the companies that sell these players recommend 1.5 mbps to view non-HD content, but to view the HD stuff, they recommend at least 4.5 mbps. I have about 6.5 mbps, so I can view HD content all the way.

  • The software update rendered my Roku player useless. I sent it back and received another player that does not work. Netflix stated that they have been getting a lot of calls on this problem. Roku stated they are trying to fix the problem, but are making no headway. Take this into account before you order one, it my be best to wait until they get it right.

  • Nice review. However, you didn't mention that Netflix only streams a small % of it's vast library this way, and certainly not the latest DVD releases.

  • Great video! planning on getting roku so I had to check this out:-)

  • doesn't it also have amazon video on demand

  • Thanks for taking the time & effort to make this informative review. Looks like a winner !

  • The roku looks bet from a component connection if you have a Plasma, and HDMI if you have an LCD.I Have both and they are Samsungs.
