Also, if you played N to f3, the knight you want to fork could capture it, thus avoiding the fork and allowing the bishop to take the coming pawn and attack the queen.

No, on 1...Nxf3+ 2.Nxf3 Black could play 2...Qxf4 (bishop is hanging). 2.Qxf3 is forced.
