http://www.knme.org - A Teepee flashing a rainbow of colors in Tucumcari, towering over Santa Rosa is the worlds largest tangerine colored Zia symbol, a huge revolving rotosphere with eight foot multicolored neon spikes in Moriarty, a giant soaring red arrow in Grants Perhaps no other American icon is so recognizable and brings sizzling, glorious color into our lives than neon. And, through the remarkable spirit of dedicated New Mexicans, neon is once again the hallmark of our greatest highway. From one end of New Mexico to the other, this film travels Route 66 and tells the story of restoring ten historic neon signs.
Restoring these signs is a renewal of our culture, pride and New Mexican identity. Blazing once again, neon restorer Bill Horn says the Rotosphere is so big and bright it could guide the Space Shuttle to Moriarty. Wearing a wild, multicolored tie-dyed shirt, bathed in the neon glow of his restored Teepee sign, Mike Callens says, soon as that sign was restored, I got color in my life. We meet the business owners who believe in their signs and the artisans who are restoring them back to their original glory. These signs are roots of our communal memories and preserving them keeps the connection between past and present. And, points New Mexico towards a bright future.
