UN troops oversee security on the border dividing the internationally recognised Greek Cypriot republic in the south from the Turkish-backed statelet to the north. Since a UN-backed reunification plan was scrapped in 2004, the island has remained in a state of limbo, with no plans to see the city unified again.Duration: 02:20

  • While the world co-celebrates the fall of the Berlin Wall twenty years ago today - its nice that the French media does keep a watchful eye on what is happening on Cyprus and the fate of Europe's last divided capital. Turkey continues to insist on recognition of the division it created by its invasion in 1974 and is not openly condemned for this. The EU indulges in double-speak about Turkey opening its ports to Cypriot ships rather than insisting that it should withdraw its army of occupation.
