In order to have the checkered background, add an alpha channel. You can do that via your layers menu. ;)

Whenever i do the erase part(tryed every step),instead of showing me a checkered background,it shows me white,what shall i do?

If your image won't turn transparent, right click on the layer and choose Add Alpha channel. Then follow this.

how do you edit so that you want the main image and thats it, there's no background at all. when you save it and re-open theres no background

My background is one colored and I did everything you said,but my Eraser tool doesn't erase background color :(

@nikolapfc2010 That's because the background does not have an alpha channel. Right click on the layer and select add alpha channel. I think that's the issue.
