Looks like red oak from the home improvement warehouse store. I use that on my instruments.
The strings sound like steel. It has a good tone.
I'm building a canjo-lele around a 6-1/2'" candy tin right now, so this is good inspiration. When I'm done maybe I'll come back for more tips and do a tambourine banjolele to carry around in the scooter.
