  • Ms. Stewart is wrong in saying that it was cheaper to just cross out the 8 and put a 9. The REAL reason for the "double dates" on graves with death months of either Jan, Feb, or Mar is because of the Calendar change of 1582. Pope Gregory XIII ordered calendar changes in order to correct errors in the Julian calendar..which made the year start Jan 1 and not on March 25.. this new calendar was not adopted in America until about 1752. To adapt to this overlap, the "double dates" were widely used!
