Ben Pratt, author of the book "Nutrition's Playground" talks to London Real about the Paleo diet, why he advocates consuming unpasteurised dairy products, how sugar and flour should be avoided, and why Brian should stop drinking beverages with artificial sweeteners.

"If you say to someone one day 'Eat a better diet', do you think they're just going to make one change?" - Ben (02:23)

"The Paleo diet is really popular." - Brian (06:01)

"Apparently saturated fat is one of the most important components of your diet." - Nic (09:25)

"The other thing that is never discussed is the type of saturated fat." - Ben (13:11)

"The more of a process its been through the less of a nutritional value I believe it to have." - Nic (15:27)

"'I make all my own cakes', OK very good but you're still filling them with sugar and flour." -Ben (16:09)

"The Olympics are taking place in London and the two largest sponsors are McDonalds and Coca-Cola." - Nic (20:49)

"How do you eat in a way that helps your children be healthy but doesn't estrange them from all of their peers." - Ben (29:34)

"Local food is good to support the local economy but that doesn't naturally mean it's better quality." - Ben (36:23)

"'Why are you eating it?' 'Because Joe Rogan does it.'" - Brian & Ben (41:35)

Regarding the point about Coca Cola & McDonalds ironically sponsor the Olympics: I disagree with the statement that "the Olympics are the pinnacle of health" or that the "Olympics are what it means to be a healthy human being".

As a professional athlete for over a decade it's clear to me that there is a distinction between health a fitness. It's possible to be extremely fit but not particularly healthy just as it's possible to be extremely healthy without possessing an elite level of fitness.

In 2003, the World Health Organisation was about to propose that there be a limit to the amount of sugar added to processed food. The sugar industry then lobbied the American government and forced the WHO to back down by threatening to withdraw the $400 million they give to the WHO every year. This stuff is going on right under your nose and by "not caring less" you allow them to get away with it. Have a nice life!

fuck off hippie mother fucker. Do some research before commenting. Instead of watching a hippie documentary. In 30 years of studies they have not linked aspartame to anything bad for your body.

Also important to remember is that diet is an environmentally contextual thing. For instance, the Maasai Mara tribe of Kenya eat (in order of volume) raw milk, raw blood, raw meat, and some fresh fruit and veg. Not only that, but internal environment is a factor too. What would constitute a healthful diet for one person, may not be the same for the next, given their relative health, activity, stress levels etc (the list goes on). But food should always be as nature intended, whatever you eat : )

So drink good quality green tea, and forget the extract of. Given a sound whole food diet with fresh produce grown in good quality soil, supplementation should not be necessary for a healthy, active individual, save for maybe a vit b complex.

Before Nic's supplement usage came up in the interview he had mentioned that in his diet he chooses the foods that are closest to there natural state. Good man. But yet supplements with a huge array of plant 'extracts'. Whats important to remember is that molecules that occur in their natural plant form combine to have a synergistic benefit. Isolated, the so called 'active ingredient' can often produce harmful side effects (see monosodium glutamate). (cont...)

This guy will not even outright say that bacon is bad.

He is a shill for industry, not a true nutritionist.
