A very basic sailing tutorial. The last half is specifically about sailing in Second Life, using Speculaas Designs (SPD) combat ships.

The combat portion of the tutorial will be coming soon.

You can see these ships in action in Second Life in major pirate sims like Beek Haven, Antiquity, and Jabberwock. There are scheduled battles which anyone can participate in or watch almost every day of the week (schedule can be found here: http://laytonio.typepad.com/swashbucc..., in the left sidebar).

For a demo copy of the small gunboat shown in the video, IM Chase Speculaas inside Second Life.

Some popular places to sail:

Antiquity Lagoon (large Victorian themed sim complex, lots of open water for sailing, and lots of pirates and navy characters):

Jabberwock (Pirate themed sim complex):

Actually a ship moves forward upwind by sailing off apparent winds created by the combination of wind speed and head wind. In effect the sail is actually a foil like that of an airplane and generates lift. The keel underneath the boat generates lift as well which in combination with the sail propels the boat forward as there is no where else for it to go. Now going down wind, either reaching or running the over all physics are different.
