'Alf' had some good points - we're reaping the whirlwind that 'he' foresaw in the 60's.

i did hear that story once.
it's amazing how many people didn't get the point of the character

@norristerse No, that's the purpose of Alf ; he's anti-racist really and invented to make fun of racism. Warren himself said that someone said to him "i love the way you have a go at those darkies" and he replied "no, actually we're having a go at narrow minded idiots like you". Ha ha, as you know Warren IS Jewish and intellectual, having attended Oxford University and plays the Saxophone and is teetotal, as well as being a trendy dresser and socialist

@eatmypies i totally agree with you. i have an enduring respect for the generation that helped get rid of hitler, and what they went through. we are all to some extent or other, a product of our environment, although not everyone became bigoted as a result of their hardships.
i definitely don't hate alf, and although i rarely find him endearing (i don't think we're supposed to) i often feel sorry for him!

@norristerse lets not hate alf, just remember we grew up with charecters like him. They formed us,and made us realise its not acceptable now.But they are a dying breed of people, that went through a terrible time, wars, rationing having to put up with developers building disgusting housing estates and being taken away from all that they knew.Lets face despite of cuts and banks making our lives crap,at the age of 48,i count myself thankfull that i never had to put up with alfs era

funny to think that before "til death do us part", warren mitchell nearly always played timid, diffident, put-upon characters. a million miles away from the volcanic gobshite that is alf garnett

@kenfig Check wikipedia- from what I'm gathering from there and other sources, they have recovered about half of the lost episodes. I just barely started getting into this and In Sickness yesterday- I'm an American who wanted to know about Archie Bunker's forefather, and it turns out Alf is funnier then Archie on many levels! American comedy writers can take some lessons from the brits.
