My first video on this channel - and a curiosity indeed from many years ago.

Casey's Court (aka 'Casey's Court Circus', 'Will Murray Gang' and 'The Casey Circus') was a popular show that ran from the early 1900's to the early 1950's in the UK. Considering it's popularity, information on the show is difficult, if not impossible to track down (on the web at least).

The only 'comprehensive' article I've found on the web is at this address: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A28505360 however it wasn't researched or written by the BBC and must be treated with some caution as the author hasn't included any references to source material.

One fact that continually pops up regarding Casey's Court is that Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel were at one time members of the troupe, although that has been dismissed as a myth (see the following link: http://charliechaplininmusichall.com/preface.html - paragraph headed "This book has three aims").

I inherited this 78 from my dad after he died. When I was small, I can remember on occasions, this record being pulled out and played along with some of the other 78's my dad had collected over the years. Both my parents were from the East End of London (both born within the sound of Bow bells so true Cockneys) and this record always made my dad smile because it brought back memories of his youth when he used to listen to barrel organ players in the street.

From information I've found on Regal records (see link: http://mgthomas.co.uk/Dancebands/IndexPages/labelindex-Q-S.htm) this particular 78 would have been produced between 1930 and 1932 and because of it's number (MR448), 1931 seems like a reasonable guess for production year.

With barrel organ, street urchins, singers, "spoons", and other effects, I imagine the sound engineer had great fun trying to set up everything for recording! Hope you enjoy.

  • My parents used to have one of these old Casey Court records. I would love to hear it again. One child asks Father Christmas for a puff, puff (a train engine). Father Christmas says here`s a fag have a puff at that. Father Christmas then offers him a bicycle. The child asks if it works? Father Christmas responds by saying "it works better than your father ever did".

  • oh my god! i never thought i'd ever hear this again. i used play it on my mum's old gramaphone and was unfortunately responsible for it's demise, i sat on it! thank you so much for putting up on youtube xxxxxx

  • Another classic which is a must ,is Christmas in Casey Court. I just wish someone would place it on You Tube.

    My copy was smashed.

  • I have this and a similar record called a "Paradise Alley concert".

You should check out Albert Whelan's "Pass Shoot Goal" which rips this record and the other to shreds.

  • Nice this and so typical of what Regal and it's rival Zonophone were offering. I can here 'Whistling in The Dark' here! which makes it 1931.I am sure I can hear Bobbie Comber in there too?.
