  • Shotokan is a very dynamic and aesthetic style. As you get older (as I do), you can skip the sparring and do more kata. Shotokan kata rock, too.

  • Funakoshi was against karate competitions because karate is for self defense, not for competitions.

  • @angolan1 sparring is good yes and i do love to spar but never get over confident sparring has rules and restricts you to them a man could be the best at sparring in the world but against a martial artist who has fought on the streets like bruce lee he would be beaten

  • OUTSTANDING!

this is the real spirit of martial arts, discipline, strenght, power and practice, all together with tradition and patience. control is applied when needed, here the mind and the body grow together to make an artist, a human being that knows his body and his mind.

modern times really need to go back to this.

  • Sparring is huge part of shotokan, and if u disagree, then go do some tai chi instead

  • shinkyokushin

  • I've myself never seen a broken rib from a middle level mawashi, probably because people - thanks to sport karate - tend to do these more for speed than for power. Kicks below the belt are generally forbidden, with the exception of sweeps, so I have no experience with its efficiency as low kick. We had the occasional broken rib from mae-geri and ushiro-geri, though, which probably project force a bit better than the mawashi.

  • To finally answer that: The mawashi-geri to the side of the head even executed with the instep easily causes a KO when not properly stopped. I've seen this happen every now and then over the years (mind you, KO's are accidents in shotokan and are not supposed to happen) and it happened to me twice.

  • chokery that is indeed a demonstration .One of the best examples of how effective Shotokan is as a martial art is when Sensei Dave Hazard demonstrates it ,be it in training or demonstartion or even for real !

  • That's Sensei Dave Hazard from 2:11 to 2:30

  • The way I see it. At 2:30 he 'feigns' kicking the shit out of the defender even though the defender's given up. Here's what's happening: that was not kumite. It was a demo. in self-defense. In a life or death meeting, control the situation, meaning, leave no man standing and don't second guess the attacker. Render ineffectual and get out. If I am wrong about this, "What a wanker". Zanshin!

  • Can anyone tell me what's the name of the move/technique that has the application of the throw in 2:14?
