This is beautiful country to backpack and camp in, too. Tons of wild life: bears, mountain lions, javelina, deer, elk, coyotes, wolves and just about anything else you can name.
I've camped in the Gila Wilderness twice now, and plan to again. In fact, the end of both trips was the bridge at the beginning of the Gila river.
Make sure you treat the water before you drink, and watch for quicksand if you go.

Thanks so much for the comment and the rating. As to the true source of the Gila, you are right...it's further up...in many tiny streams, hundreds even, but I believe this fork of the middle and the east branches mark the spot where the "Gila River" is finally named outright. A remote area with mountainous roads from Silver City, NM...which is a great Artists' Town and worth a visit in it's own right!
