Zadzooks: Watchmen movie versus comic books

http://www.washingtontimes.com/ March 13, 2009 -- Washington Times reporters Sonny Bunch and Joseph Szadkowski compare Zack Snyder's Watchmen movie to the Watchmen comic book series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.

In the story, Watchmen is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the "Doomsday Clock" - which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union - is permanently set at five minutes to midnight.

I've never understood this belief that if you don't read the graphic novel first you're going to be confused by the movie.

That's crap.

I'd never even heard of Watchmen until it was advertised at the theatre. I saw the movie and loved it enough to buy the graphic novel and the DVD.

He put that stuff in for the opposite reason you're indicating. If he wanted to satisfy moviegoers (ie get bigger sales) he would have cut it down to pg-13, which was very doable. He stayed true to the spirit of the GN for FANS OF THE GN. maybe not every fan clearly some are eternally confused souls, but for most of us it made perfect sense.

I think youre totally misinterpreting why he put the ultra violence in, increasing the sexuality goes along with this thesis. The GN was published in 86' and at that time the amount of violence and gore and nudity in the comic was well above what had been common for comics in that era. Snyder didn't want to leave it there and have people get the impression that this story was ever intended to be kid friendly, which it wasn't in it's inception.
