DPS Students Score Low on Math Test

DETROIT (myFOXDetroit.com) - Another blow for Detroit Public Schools. It's students ranked the lowest in the nation in math scores.

Students in the fourth and eighth grades performed the lowest in the country on a nationally standardized test. Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb says 70-percent of students performed at a below basic level, but he's not blaming the students.

"Today is a sad day for the city of Detroit and in particular the Detroit Public Schools. It is a day that calls upon all of us to express our outrage and, most importantly, our frustration," said Bobb.

Bobb says Detroit public schoolchildren ranked last out of the 18 cities that took part. This was the first year Detroit took part in the test known as the National Assessment of Educational Progress.

"If these results were produced by members of a corporate board of directors, that board would be removed," Bobb said.

Detroit students scored so low, Bobb says it was as though the students never received an education.

"As if the kids never attended school and simply guessed at the answers. This is an abysmal situation," said Bobb.

Bobb flanked with other educational leaders called on teachers and school administrators to step up. He says he won't let anyone or anything get in the way.

"And if any adult gets in the way or organization that gets in the way of what's good for kids, we're going to go over you, under you, around you or on you because our job is to make sure we do what's right for kids in the Detroit Public Schools," Bobb said.

Detroit public school students were at least 30 points below Michigan's average for those who took the test and 40 to 50 points below the national average. That's just when it comes to math. The reading and the science test score results
