normally it would be considered impolite also in Austria, but it's a tradition that the audience claps during the Radetzky-March at the New Year's Concert, that's why they do it. And I like it, it adds some life and comedy to the performance :)

What they show us in the movie "Amadeus" is correct: theatre and concerts were amusement for the people. They used to sing along, clap, laugh out loud. Not all sat down, some walked about the theatre. Sometimes food and bottles of wine were handed out to the audience. In those days, (17th and 18th century) the audience were much more involved then they are today. Now, we just sit back, quiet, and watch. Boring... No fun that way.
