Note the modern understanding of story telling - to demonstrate philosophical and moral truths in a way that is practical, contrasted with the post-modern understanding of story telling - mental self-gratification.
The world has no difficulty philosophizing about nothing for hours (decades) on end, and we've grown to think it's okay to do it with no intent of actually answering the question asked. We need answers, not a pat on the back for demonstrating our instintual ability to ask questions.
