A short portrait of Billy Latta, a North Carolina dairy farmer.
Over the past few months, I have spent a lot of time at Latta Dairy Farm in Hillsborough, North Carolina. The farm is, like most dairy farms in NC, in fairly bad shape—it loses around $50,000 per year. I wanted to get a sense of what it is about farming that keeps people like Billy Latta from moving on to another trade.
