Kyai Selamet - UCSB - Ldr Semarang, pelog nem

The UC Santa Barbara Central Javanese gamelan ensemble Kyai Selamet (Mike Pievac, dir.) performs Ladrang Semarang, a piece recently composed by our guest director Pak Djoko Walujo. Semarang refers to a large town on the northern coast of Central Java. The melodic configuration of this composition is rather unusual since it features some striking modulating cadences and syncopated balungan (skeletal melodic line). Performed at Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall, UCSB, May 13, 2007.
