In the book Esmeralda is a silly, shallow girl of sixteen, who is in love with the Capt. up to the very end. She isn't even an actual gypsy. I really didn't like her, so it annoys me that she lives in nearly all versions. It also annoys me how in a few versions they turn her into someone with a socio-political agenda. The Esmeralda in the book had no such lofty ambitions.
