  • It's great that Thatcher didn't completely get away with it, and good on Richard Herring for telling her that what she said was unacceptable. She's not evil, just gobsmackingly ignorant - so far removed from real life that she doesn't even realise that what she said was racist.

Why did Matthew Wright not ask for an apology? Was he afraid of her? Why did he not give a balanced argument for using the modern, appropriate language that some people refer to as "PC" ?

    Good for Richard.

  • 1. Lily Allen never said that. as soon as she heard about the article she called her lawyers.

    2. Carol Thatcher is an idiot

    3. I like Richard Herring, he made some good points.

  • As for Tsonga no he doesn't look like a gollywog but I understand he once had a hair style the same as the doll and this is what carol was talking about.

  • Well I'm only going on what I heard. The campaiging as far as I know was againts using words like golly woggie and nigger not againts the doll itself which you can still buy. Carol is not arrogant as I said she does not see it as a racist term and did not intend the word to offend if she had said one of those black dolls would that have been seen as ok. If the word is used to offend like woggie and nigger are then as I said before that is unacceptable but ok if used to name of a doll .

  • Thats not what my brother in law who works on the show said. what age do you think she is? she's 55 and it was in the 60's that they started campaigning against them & in the 80's when they were removed from libraries.

Tsonga is mixed race & fair skinned with short hair, how does he look like a gollywog? She is so arrogant she still can't see that it's offensive to people.

You & the rest of the 'pc gone mad' brigade might love golly, woggie & nigger but many of us do not & rightly so.

  • That's alot of questions to answer.

The point I was trying to make is that most people of that age group do not see gollywog as a racist team. And where did you hear people walked out. Going by what was said on the wright stuff No one did anything or say anything when carol made the remark. As for Jade goody she was using the word poperdom to cause offence.

  • Does Tsonga LOOK like a gollywog? Is Thatcher stuck in 1960? Did her education stop in 1974? Is her age an excuse? Was she brought up by a monster, that hated her? Is she a racist? yes. was she representing the BBC? Yes.

Why would she say such a thing? and why did Joe Brand & Adrian Childes walk out in disgust while being the same generation? and why did Mathew Wright condem Jade Goody screaming 'poperdom' in an arguement? because they are not only racist but clasist as well. Shoot the bitch

  • I agree that it isn't right to call anyone black a gollywog if you used it to offend but carol was brought up durring a time as my mum was when it wasn't seen as a racist term just the name of a doll that was around when they were kids.

If carol had said I don't like that gollywog ect then that would be unacceptable but all she said was this person looked like one of the dolls.

And if someone was offended why didn't they tell her instead of running off to teacher.

  • And his hair was FAR drier too. Well done Rich.

  • Of course, what I meant what that Thatcher should apologise to those who DID take offence (as I'm sure many did). She seems completely oblivious to that point, which baffles me.

You're right that the Mail is completely hypocritical on this issue, and in fact Richard raises this point at 6:03. Perhaps they have a skewed sense of moral fibre, in that those words merely constitute as "free speech" whereas any form of japery (i.e. Russell Brand / Jonathon Ross") is somehow disgraceful.

  • Because it wasn't his place to ask for an apology. I agree largely with what you said but you also display one of the problems raised by this event and discussion and that is that people who weren't insulted actively seek an apology. Of course she ought to be asked to apologise (and that may have been your point), however, When you have institutions like the MAil taking the moral high ground on issues that they themselve fuel, it further muddies the water. What you said about PC is spot on!
