@cjavierce - there isn't any known author. It's one of the oldest of the most popular Swedish folk songs. Originally, it's a medieval ballad. (if you think about it, it does sound very medieval too) So nobody knows, there are hundreds of different known versions, although this 'standard' text was written down in the early 19th century.
