David Beeder performing movement three from John Beck's Sonata for Timpani at the Kansas State Music Festival. The mallets used were hard felt cartwheels manufactured and shipped from Smith Mallets. This sonata was written for the great Steve Gadd when he was in his high school years. Enjoy!

  • Your top and bottom drums are out of tune. THey should be Es not the Fs that you have them tuned to. This song is in a minor key not a major key and try playing some dynamics all I here is loud.

  • The top and bottom drums were sharp, especially during the gliss. section, it's very hard to hit that note at this tempo. The f's and ff's weren't defined as well as I could have been. I feel that the energy and intensity that I put into this movement traded off fairly for the less-than-decent dynamics. Thanks!

  • Careful not to hit towards the center of the drum! I noticed on the D you were edging in, and yes the top and bottom are tuned too high. After the glissandos your bottom drum is flat. Just try to keep track of where the pedal is at E. As for the 2 against 3, all I could hear was your right hand during the crescendo. Always be sure to balance. Also, more dynamic contrast could be used on this. I only heard forte and only softer in a few parts. Just be sure to keep those things in shape!

  • Three (this is the most important), your left hand seems to stay in a downward position too often (seems to stop-down, like on a marching snare), a piston-like motion would create clearer articulations and look more professional. Hope this helps!

  • I know you uploaded this video a while ago, so I'm sure you've improved greatly since then, but I'd say that this is a bit boring to listen to for a few reasons. One, dynamics weren't apparent. Two, I believe the articulation of notes could have been better, but it looks like you were focused on speed before sound.

  • Good luck to you too, sir.

  • me too dude. I've been working on that piece with a broken thumb. Thank God it'll be healed by my auditions. Anyways good luck!

  • I'm doing this for solo&ensemble this year and for my auditions for college.

  • Your top and bottom drums are out of tune. They should be Es not the Fs that you have them tuned to.

  • Awesome performance. David is a real comer on the local music scene. His styling and intonation are very advanced for his experience level
