On a cruise to The Canary Islands from Southampton, (November 12th 2009) The Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship Independence Of The Seas runs into a Force 11 Storm in the Bay Of Biscay with 95 Knot Winds and 35 ft plus waves. The Royal Promenade was closed after a glass panel fell from above, dislodged by the movement of the ship, narrowly missing a passenger. All outer decks were closed at the height of the storm and the call at Madeira was cancelled. The trip back was much better, only force 7, but it was easier to get better pictures due to the better visibility. ( Last shot shows the trip back, don`t miss it, the best bit is at the end !! Dont forget this last shot was from 4 decks up, other shots from 10 decks up. )

  • Force 11 Gale..... Bollox this is storm force 11.... Next number up is 12, hurricane

  • @buggerybo well, it said force 11 on the in cabin tv screen for sure, and have picture to prove it ! But have changed the title now to avoid moaning comments !

  • Never a storm force 11, none of the outside decks would be open at all and the sea would be a mass of white... A fair sea but more likely to be an 8...

  • @neillark

The outside decks were closed a few minutes after the outside video was taken, and did not reopen for a day or so after that.

  • I went on the same ship and went through the bay of biscay and waved where hitting up to the 6th deck, was scary... 4th deck was flooded but obviously the drainage holes sorted it also a cargo ship was also vertically

  • @buggerybo In gregvideos defence,I was on a cross channel ferry once, when a message was put out that due to wind force 11,the ships stabilisers were being deployed.Don't know if it helps, but I'm sure gregvideo is telling the truth.

  • An Ex Navy man said that waves tend to look much smaller on film due to lack of ''depth of field'' and 3D vision. There are a few really monumental seas on YT, I think ''Tanker in big storm'' is one of the most impressive, but can't fully remember..

  • @gregvideo07 Storm force is stronger than gale force, but either way, I doubt if the ship would post incorrect messages to the passengers, especially as BBC Shipping Forecasts are given twice daily! [Biscay is notoriously rough].

  • @Pichu1996 Yes, it was closed down by the wall you can see, because a pane of glass from one of the windows above nearly fell onto a passenger.

  • It will have limited roll as it has been designed in

  • i was there!!!!!!!
