Performing a fun but complicated sit-down rig. Many instruments!

The recording was done in one take so there is no overdubbing. All sounds you hear were performed in real-time in one take (along with the main video), and then additional video shots of close-ups where filmed later. The video is not all in one take, but the music itself was performed without any tricks (even the harmony is in real-time using a harmonizer).

This rig was the culmination of several years of research and building. After performing with several stand-up style "drum on the back" rigs, I started building "sit-down rigs". This is the 4th and best sit-down rig that I built. The drums are all triggers connected to a drum sound module. Even the tambourine is actually just a trigger (the sound you here is a sample from the drum module). Only the hi-hat and cymbals are acoustic.

But it's very difficult to transport and set up. So I no longer perform on this rig. It was yet another experiment in my one-man-band career.

But it was great fun to play! And was a big challenge mentally to keep all those things going at once.

The instruments used are:
1) kick drum (played by right foot)
2) snare drum (played by left heel)
3) hi-hat (played by left foot)
4) tambourine (played by right heel)
5) splash cymbal (cable from right upper arm)
6) Midi keyboard
7) harmonica
8) kazoo
9) vocals
10) harmony vocals (Helicon VoicePrism harmonizer-on/off switch worked by left knee)

Another one of my performances was uploaded by another person:

It's me performing Hotel California.
It is a different smaller "sit-down rig" that I used to busk with in Tokyo. But many people commenting on the video think it's a Japanese person performing, but it's not! It's just me with another one of my crazy rigs.

  • This is actually awesome! This deserves many more hits!

  • @OL1V3R666 Thanks! Although some people think it was multi-track recorded, it was all recorded in one take with all sounds created in real time.

  • What is that song called you played in Ueno park. (the one in the linked video)

  • @vinuto9 That's me in Ueno park playing Hotel California on a cold November day without hardly an audience. But somebody caught me on video tape and now I finally have my own channel.

  • @paulmccartneyloverrr inderdaad, echt geweldig gewoon

  • dude, that's awesome

  • man; you inspired me to play guitar and use a foot pedal on a cajon for the bass drum. I'm also going to have a my left foot pedal for a high-hat, and a ground side snare with a foot pedal (I'll try to throw a ground cymbal and cymbal pedal in there too. Then I'm going to put a bass string on my lowest guitar string for a more "authentic" bass guitar sound. Thanks for showing me it can be done.
