LAUSA AIR responded to call from UNICEF Europe to charter an aircraft to fly essential supplies to children in Colombo Sri Lanka.... In true LAUSA AIR spirit the management team offered it services to UNICEF free of charge..

This video is the return flight into London Gatwick from Colombo, Sri Lanka to pick up consignment two and also a crew change. Flying the 747-400F (Cargo variant) this flight, callsign " LAUSA CARGO 955 " is crewed by both LAUSA AIR Senior Fleet Captain Daniel Harvey flying as Captain and the First Officer on this flight is LAUSA AIR Captain Camille Georges. During this flight Camille is actually in Boston, USA and Dan is in London, UK. Both pilots are wearing pilot headsets and our in-flight cockpit voice comms between pilots is via the LAUSA Teamspeak server on voice activation mode so we can talk and communicate as if we are sitting next to each other in a cockpit.

As a junior pilot, Dan uses this flight as a training opportunity to teach Camille STARS Standard Instrument Arrivals and in fact Camille is (PIC) pilot in command flying from the left (Captain) side whilst Dan handles comms and nav from the right (1st Officer) side.

Arriving into London Gatwick on a Willo Three Alpha arrival, Gatwick is so jammed with arrivals that the flight enters holding for 20 minutes in the Willo hold initially at flight level 110 leaving the hold at flight level 70. Hoping to make a Surveillance Radar Approach [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surveill... ] for the benefit of Camille who has never flown a talk-down approach before, the airport is too busy and we settle for an ILS approach in zero visibility for 08R.

As a result of this call to help LAUSA AIR is part of a UNICEF Scheme and will donate 10 cents to UNICEF each month for every virtual flight flown by a LAUSA AIR PILOT.

UNICEF: Children still at risk as renewed flooding hits Sri Lanka
COLOMBO, February 8, 2011 -- UNICEF assisted by LAUSA AIR's Cargo division is dispatching more supplies to support communities hit by renewed, severe flooding in Sri Lanka.

The latest batch of supplies includes 19,000 school kits(including notebooks, pens, pencils) 10,600 reinforced tarpaulins, 60 drums of chlorine bleaching powder, 2,000 sleeping mats, water tanks (2,000 litre capacity, each), water purification tablets and children's clothes (5,000 sets).

This new consignment of materials means the total value of supplies sent in the past three weeks by UNICEF Sri Lanka to assist communities in the east of the country is more than $600,000 (USD).

These supplies are largely aimed at helping families to ensure they have access to safe water and an ability to maintain basic levels of hygiene.

More than a million people have been affected by this latest flooding which has impacted communities living in the north and the east of the country. In many places, schools remain closed as they have become centers of refuge.

UNICEF Sri Lanka responded to the first phase of severe flooding, which was concentrated in the east of the country, by sending two consignments of supplies.
