In addition to the parody painting scene (in which Midge calls herself "stupid" for making Scottie angry), the movie shows how hurt Midge is when Scottie jokes about their brief college engagement; when Midge sees Madeleine leave Scottie's apartment; when Scottie is unresponsive at the mental institution, (etc.). Scottie can't see Midge in romantic, sexual terms. Only mysterious, beautiful, helpless blondes turn him on.

Hitch always had such a naughty sense of humour -- love this scene!

@jackinla8 Not only does Hitchcock comes up with a perfect visual joke for Midge, which she uses to try to snap Scottie out of his fantasy, but the joke backfires. We are left with Midge's anguish and self-hatred. Lesson: Men do not want to be snapped out of their fantasies about "perfect" women.

I am writing a paper over "Vertigo" and this is the exact scene I chose. Thank you for posting it. No one else seems to believe that is has any importance in the movie.
