Pathways Past Poverty Candidate Forum moderated by Center for Public Deliberation Director Martin Carcasson.

Question 4: On average across the nation it costs between $35,000 and $150,000 a year to keep a homeless person on the streets given the use of resources such as hospitals, jails and other emergency assistance. In contrast, the same cost assessment found that it costs between $13,000 and $25,000 per year per person to house and provide support services for the same individual. The City of Loveland estimates that there are 705 homeless individuals in Loveland according to the Housing and Urban Development definition in the city. Additionally, the Thompson School Districts surveyed their students in 2007 and found that 24% reported being homeless at some point during high school, and most reported not telling anyone of their situation. With growing levels of expenditures and attention going towards the issue of homelessness, as well as the degree of human suffering involved, not only on a national level, but here in Fort Collins and Loveland, what do you see as potential ways to address this issue?
