With its growing middle class, manufacturing sector and military, China is emerging as a powerful player on the world stage. But does the rise of China mean the decline of the United States? What new responsibilities accompany China's new role on the world stage? And what internal challenges must China overcome if it is to succeed in its development?

This Stanley Foundation video, filmed in November of 2008, probes those questions through interviews with various journalists, including the Atlantic's James Fallows.

  • Its not a rise but a recovering... China represents more than half of the world's GDP centuries ago and technologies were also centuries ahead of any other nation in the world. people dont study history anymore these days and they dont even remember what happened yesterday. tell u what..... History repeats itself always..like it or not.

  • China will bury the U.S.A..

  • @bushiman32 The West copied China through Marco Polo, remember that???

  • @secretident2 Sadly, I doubt the people you are addressing will ever read your comment! They are too busy getting even more rich by moving American jobs to China and India.

  • China is very good at copying not creating.

  • @sealobo not really, it is not necessary to be fully westernized to be a modern country nowadays. That kind of thinking is so outdated, and i think the western world is more likely to be islamized anyway.

  • @xrey2000 I'm saying that China shouldn't be glorified.

  • @CaramelMarshmallow What do censorship have anything to do with what I've mention? Are you comparing internet censorship to centuries of genocides and oppression of other civilizations?

  • @xrey2000 And have you completely forgotten about the censorship of Google and Tienanmen Square?

  • @xrey2000 Also, What about your pollution problems? The smog is terrible there.
