I currently live and work in Gunma Prefecture, Japan. Gunma is the setting of the world famous anime Initial D which is about the motorsport drifting and touge racing. Growing up, I was a big fan of anime and tuner culture and so it had always been a dream of mine to experience the subculture of Drifting first hand.
This past month, I had the amazing opportunity to check out the real live drifting scene in Gunma. Myself and a couple friends went to Akagi Mountain which is the real life counterpart of several of the tracks in the Initial D anime, manga and games. There we discovered that the drifting scene is alive and well. It was literally. real. live. initial D.
One of the people I met that night is famous for being the best driver in Gunma. He is a really cool and soft spoken Japanese guy who is a monster behind the wheel of his insane S15 Nissan Silvia. He took me on a couple runs up and down the touge (mountain pass) and I had no idea it was even possible to drive a car that fast on the mountain, much less going sideways into and out of a corner.
It was awesome.I can`t wait to go again and hopefully I`ll be able to get some more and better video. Hope you guys enjoy watching!
