Coast Guard crews helped Flagler Beach officials search the Atlantic overnight after several witnesses claim they saw what they believed to be an aircraft plunge into the ocean.
Flagler Beach police told WESH 2 News that a resident reported seeing someone lighting a celebration lantern late last night. The police chief said he thinks the lantern may have been what the bystanders who said they saw an aircraft.
Police investigators said they received reports late Tuesday of a light, described by some as a fireball, falling into the ocean.
Coast Guard crews from Jacksonville and Ponce Inlet searched about eight miles offshore from the Flagler Beach Pier early Wednesday morning.
An aircraft or wreckage was not recovered. Officials also said they had not received reports of a missing or overdue aircraft.
