After all the crap this man had to deal with in his life, it is amazing to me that he could have written such purely joyful music. And to hear him play it himself is really incredible; thank you so very much.
I love this piece to no end. To any "Atlas Shrugged" fans out there, to me at least, this is Halley's fifth concerto.

@LordN3mrod It's good old Dimitri (since the conductor died in 1967, it can't be the grandson). Great recording!

Is the Dmitry Shostakovich at the piano THE Dmitry Dmitrievich Shostakovich the composer or his grandson?
-
@marvinracer88 will be terrible
(: fun fact: Shostakovich frequently used to send cards to himself to check how good the postal service was.

Rachmaninoff once said that Benno Moiseiwitsch played his (Rachmaninoff's) piano works better than he himself did. Similarly, Rachmaninoff said that Horowitz "swallowed [the Rach 3] whole."
Rachmaninoff once the greatest pianist of his generation, according to Harold Schoenberg, but here he is praising others' interpretations of his own music. Most pieces can be played in different ways, and the composer only presents one way. This does not mean that his way is better, just more authentic.
