Iraqi Maqam Panjoukah Yossef Ya'acov Shem Tov يوسف يعقوب شم توب (العواد)

The Iraqi Maqam (not to be confused with the mode by the same name) is a uniqe musical style used in iraqi singing.

Here the genre is used as an instrumental (maqamat). The maqam panjouka opens with two musicians and develops into of form of dialogue between two oud and ends in a "pasta" (iraqi folk song with a refrain) "Hada mou insaf minak".

Youssef Yaakov chem tov was born in Baghdad in 1922 and emigrated to israel in 1951. He started playing the oud at age five. He studied with the turkish professor, Sissak Bek, in Baghdad. In Iraq, Youssef Yaakov was considered among the best players in the country.

Forty years after leaving Baghdad he met his friend Jamil Bachir, for the last time, in cairo Egypt. He accompanied Egyptian Singers Raja Abdou and Leila Helmi and the Iraqi Singer Salima mourad-Pacha.

In Israel, he played oud for Israel's National Radio-Oriental Orchestra for many years. This Interpretation of the Panjoukah Maqam illustrates the exceptional encounter between two generations coming from the musical background.
