Texas Lone Staar Saloon - A final walk-around the walls

The Texas Lone Staar Saloon situated in Washington Square, Soi 22 Sukhumvit, is closing it's doors on May 29, 2011. This bar has been a favourite watering-hole of American, British, Canadian, Australian and European expats since the early 1980's when George Pipas came over from Patpong and opened for business. This bar has seen a host of characters (on both sides of the bar) come and go over the years (as reflected by the bar walls), and has always been a primary meeting point in Bangkok. Many will be sad to see it go, and hope a similar establishment will rise from the ashes. An era in Bangkok watering-holes has gone.

Mary Anne told me last week she wants the bell and the buffalo head (mind you I think it comes with a host of bugs). I certainly would not want the coyote skin, 8-) What will happen to everything else I just don't know.

Lots of memories. I did George's "creative" accounting for a number of years. He was a trip.

sorry to hear about george and the bar closing im 41 now and this was the first bar i went in 22 years ago on my first trip to thailand

I'm happy to hear that Mary Anne wants the cape buffalo mount. I shot it so many years ago in Zambia and sent it to George when he was located on Patpong. It was the sorce of alot of fun all these years....

@old45s One kind soul did ring the bell at the farewell party ... probably for the last time. Good turn out to say goodbye. George would have been pleased. Or maybe he was there watching.

Nearly brought a tear to my eye! The end of an era! Really liked the shot of the Texan "regulars" caricature picture taken from the other side of the bar thru the top shelf of drink bottles. There were some pictures hanging on that wall that you captured that I forgot about. I wonder on the last day... who'll be the last person the ring that goddamm bell? (....and where will the bell go then?)
