I stopped chasing the Portola Railroad Museum Special through the Feather River Canyon at the famous Keddie Wye. The odd horn you hear is from someone honking it from the caboose.

  • were is that wye at? i seen it in history of the union pacific

  • Search for Quincy, CA on a map, follow Highway 70 north to where Highway 89 splits off. There should be three railroad tracks converging and that's where the Keddie Wye is.

Western Pacific built the line before Union Pacific acquired them.

  • what kinda horn did the 6936 originaly have??

  • Leslie S-5T-RF (5 chimes with one facing rear) was factory-installed on DDA40X's, so that would be my guess.

  • Actually, that horn was not on the caboose, we mounted it a WP M5R24 on the 6936 for the trip.

  • The "odd horn" that I'm referring to is the kazoo-like sound that's different from the M5. There was someone sitting at the rear of the caboose looking toward me as I heard the sound. Was that you?

  • i wonder if the 2 dda40xs with the built in sirens were preserved, there were actually two dda40xs with sirens as horns i thought they were cool

  • If ever anyone comes through Omaha Neb. on I-80, there is a non working DDA40X (#6900) Along with a BIG BOY steam Locomotive on the hill next to the highway next to the Missouri river. It is a railroad museum. It is realyy cool to see. I live in Council Bluffs Ia. which is right across the river from Omaha and it was a 'field day' for the Media when UP moved these 'beast' from their pervious location in the downtown area, on trailers. There must have been 100 wheels on each trailer.

  • See the flooding that happened under the Keddie Wye Trestle or

  • i left up two yrs ago. i was the conductor of this nightmare. we must of had 50 foamers follow us up the canyon.

  • Nice to hear the classic M5 horn. Interesting reference a poster made. When thinking about it, it does "sort of" remind me of the horns on the old 1970s Cadillacs though to me those Cadillac horns sound a little more like an out of tune Nathan K5H horn.

  • no insult to a really great horn as a horn collector I love especilly on this engine at the famous Keddie Wye but has anyone ever heard the old horns on cadalac cars they sound very simulr as i stated definatlly no insult to a great horn the M5 that thought just came to mind LOL
