@Rmajor3 I think he meant this in a good way. You gotta be a little crazy to act like this. And positive madness yields superb music.

@wvmcc82 Another thing is that I always wonder what some tune would sound like in another genre, which is another reason to record covers. I've heard a rock version of "Feeling Good" and I enjoyed it. And there are many rock songs I'd love to hear adapted into jazz. And so I'd rather people gave up on those stealing accusations and focused on making good music, including rediscovering old songs in new arrangements.

@wvmcc82 Stealing black music sounds silly »now«. Take the 60s or 70s as an example: I only remember whites covering blacks' songs, not the other way round. Not so long ago I learnt that "War" was written by Whitfield and Strong, although I used to know only Frankie Goes to Hollywood's version. And yes, 'steal' may be too strong a word – you can't blame people for covering great songs.
As for "I Put a Spell on You", I prefer Nina Simone's version, but as you said – it's a matter of taste.

Saying that "Soul and Blues are only for black people" is quite the racist statement made by people who commonly levy the charge on others. Screamin' Jay was fantastic, but CCR has their own incredible version. I like the CCR version a little more, but it's not a race issue, just a taste issue.
This whole notion of "stealing" the black man's music is silly. Artists have been adapting music since the beginning of time. Listen to Plant & Page, Fogerty, and see white boys can do it too.
