  • what the " is that aperatus?

  • Its called a Firebird, a Maynard original. Its a trumpet with a trombone-like slide valve. He also invented the Super-Bone, which is a trombone with valves like a trumpet.

  • The fellow after Stan Mark is Joe Mosello.

I got to see this band three times between April and June, 1977, in Atlanta. When all the trumpets walked out into the crowd, whoa!!

Stan Mark, Dennis Noday, Joe Mosello, and Ron Tooley. What a group!

  • Incredible clip, thanks for posting. Anyone know which show this was and why in the world it has never made it to DVD? It looks like the one I caught the tail end of on BET one night a long time ago, LIVE from Toronto or something. I threw a tape in and caught the end of Stella by Starlight and an abreviated Pagliacci but then it ended and I always wondered what other tunes were in that show. Might be the same show? Would love to see the whole thing. God bless The Boss!!!!

  • @scrimnot Yes, I too would like to know where this came from! This is by far the best performance of this piece.

  • Unbelievable!

  • @lonnied123

Yes, the "Firebird" was a model made by "Holton" (as the "MF horn" models). I tryed one of these instruments some years ago... But was never able to make correct use of the slide.

Holton have also in his catalog at this this a "Don Ellis" model with 4 valves (the 4th for quater tones).

  • @lonnied123 I can't speak for the Firebird, but the Superbone is not just a valve trombone. Valve trombones were around way before Maynard. The Superbone has valves AND a working slide so you can use either...or I've seen some people use both at the same time when showing off.

  • I have so many favorite MF tunes, and this is definitely one of them. It still moves me.

  • @PIR8KINGBOC ...and they're hard as hell to find, too.

  • @tlmaddox Maynard always had great musicians, but this is probably my favorite MF trumpet section of all time. Life hasn't been the same since he passed away.

  • @tlmaddox

How lucky you are to have seen this lineup. Nothing, and I mean nothing, today holds a candle to this.

  • So much respect for Maynard. No matter how hard anyone tries nobody will ever be the same. Such an inspiration. Also, if you liked this check out bill chase's River.

  • @3kingkool I had a Firebird from about May 1987 until June 1990. Wish I'd never let it go, would love to get it back but the guy I sold it to sold it, that guy sold it and he can't remember who he sold it to. Great horn!!!
