A little about Sholom...

Sholom Rubashkin is a pillar in his community, a generous man with 10 children, a loving wife and an extended family known for their long-time philanthropy in Iowa and in the Jewish community.

For many years, they provided for other families in need and did not seek wealth for themselves. They lived in a very modest Postville house with few, if any, luxuries.

Rubashkin, who is 51, was the Vice President of Agriprocessors, Inc., the country's largest kosher meat processing plant where hundreds of men and women were employed. For years, the business was respected as a major contributor to the Iowa economy and to the livestock industry to which his family has contributed for generations.

Now, Rubashkin sits in a Cedar Rapids prison cell awaiting sentencing. He was convicted in Federal court in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, of bank fraud relating to Agriprocessors' loan from First Bank Business Capital of St. Louis, and for failure to pay livestock providers in a timely manner.

The loan was being paid until ICE conducted a raid on Agriprocessors' premises in May 2008, driving Agriprocessors into bankruptcy. Agriprocessors has been sold and the Rubashkin family is in debt. Seventy-two charges that Rubashkin employed illegal aliens have been dropped.

Sholom Rubashkin has been denied bail and sits in the Linn Correctional Center in Cedar Rapids, and is facing up to 1,225 years in prison. A sentencing date has not been set at this time, but it is expected to be in the coming months.

This case is a tragedy for Sholom Rubashkin and his family, who are being kept apart from each other during this time. It also is a call to arms for the entire Jewish community.

A number of prominent Jewish leaders and organizations have arisen to decry the verdict and call upon the courts to consider his family, his philanthropy, and his future and deliver a lighter sentence. It is imperative that he receive support -- both in letters to the judge who will render sentencing and in contributions to his legal fund to provide stronger representation -- in a concerted effort to help Sholom Rubashkin.

Organizations such as the American Jewish Congress, Agudath Israel and the Orthodox Union penned letters of support during his trial.

Most recently, the Rubashkin family retained Nathan Lewin to lead the appeals of Sholom Rubashkin. Mr. Lewin is among the top appellate attorneys in the United States, and has argued in every federal appellate circuit in the nation. He has presented 27 cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, a number involving Jewish causes.

Sholom Rubashkin will continue to be represented as well by his initial legal team, Guy Cook and Montgomery Brown.

You can help in these two ways:

If you or someone close to you has been touched personally by an act of good will or philanthropy by Sholom Rubashkin, we would love to hear from you, as your story may be helpful to Mr. Rubashkin's plight. Please email any letters of support to:

Did you know: Following Agriprocessors' collapse, Postville, Iowa, became a ghost town. The population shrunk by nearly half; the town is nearly insolvent. The mayor resigned, reportedly out of frustration. The median household income dropped, unemployment rose, many are unable to sell their homes. The local church wor...ks around the clock to help the community's largely unemployed immigrants pay for food and rent.
