When it comes to garage rock, it doesn't get more gray and dreary than the Fresh & Onlys' Play It Strange. It's a spectral album of songs that relies more on its sound than its songwriting. And that wouldn't be a bad thing if there was just a little more variety on this album.

After the first several tracks, the opaque vocals and country twang start to take their toll and make me feel as if Play It Strange is a never-ending hedge maze where every turn looks like the one before it.

I didn't dig the LP that much, but hopefully one of y'all will.

What do you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? Fav track? Fav Fresh & Only's album?

4/10

  • You should definitely do a full-Cal Chuchesta-review, lol.

  • @sorrycaps maybeeeeeeeeeee

  • Hey TND, have you heard the new Yawning Man album, Nomadic Pursuits? Pretty spacey/instrumental desert rock, came out a coupla months ago. I recently found out that they came out with their new album, and I was surprised to see that very few music reviewers covered it. Wuzzupwitdat?

  • @malachite125 Dunno. Just listened to a few tracks from it on their MySpace. It's oooooooookayyyyyyyyyyyy. I can't say I was getting all that excited. *shrugs*

  • To me this band can do no wrong. I happen to love bands with a slightly darker edge to them, one that I'll mention is Joy Division, and many people dont like them for the singer because his voice is kinda muttled and drowned out. They seem like real musicians playing what they want to play and not conforming to the masses to make them happy. But it does take a special ear to listen to their music

  • made my day!!! thanks downloadmusic .im

  • I'm with you here ,they only have a few good tunes and a TERRIBLE live show.

  • WTF dude. This is an amazing album! I didnt really like the past albums. Didnt give me anything new. For my ears, you know. The ears man. This album did. But whatever dude.

  • I really liked this LP, it was fresh (haha) and interesting. as much as i love lofi, i think their sound benefited with an upgrade. I think they are super underrated

  • When I'm sick, music is my medicine! :-)

  • @careylynch COOL STORY BRO

  • I really like this LP, its like a mix of The Coral, Ganglians and Crystal Stilts

  • Ok this is probably going to sound stupid but this is what I think. Like imagine Edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros. I think of that as sorta cowboy in a tiny town in the 1800s an he is fed up with everyone so he roams the wilderness on a horse tripping his balls off. Fast forward to nowadays. There's a teenager maybe a distant relative of the older cowboy person but in a similar position. He takes his car out and goes driving very fast but sorta a parallel to what happened generations earlie

  • Took me so long, but I am head over hells in love with this band. The EP August in my Mind showed me how much talent they had and forced me to pay more attention. After that it all clicked.
