Really sad story, this guy was smart enough to play it straight and still do well. Started playing too much - lost his edge - had to cheat to keep up the lifestyle. I think it is pretty apparent that he meant for the plane to continue out over the ocean and crash in the gulf. It is not unusual for an autopilot to shut itself off. He'd been smarter to have made no call whatsoever to ATC and avoid the jets scrambling. For such a smart guy, he was pretty dumb. "Canoe accident?" at 2:30 AM? Please ...
